TO CONGRATULATE NEW COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) OF SUMTER COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF ITS NEWLY CONSTRUCTED SANCTUARY.
Whereas, New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA) of Sumter County, began its history in January, 1981, as a nucleus of thirty faithful worshipers meeting at the Moore Elementary School in Sumter; and
Whereas, the faithful and visiting ministers and neighboring Presbyterians worshiped together and laid the groundwork for the organization of a new church; and
Whereas, the Reverend Warren Lesane, Jr., became the organizing pastor of the new church, which chose the name of New Covenant, and he officiated at its Charter Day Service, marking the formal beginning of New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA); and
Whereas, the Reverend Lesane was installed as the first pastor of the church and faithfully served the members until 1990; and
Whereas, many of the church's successful Christian education and outreach ministries began under his leadership; and
Whereas, the church's dream of erecting a sanctuary was revitalized and came to fruition when the new sanctuary was completed in October of 1995, fewer than fourteen years after the group of thirty faithful met in a school house; and
Whereas, the Reverend Retha Mungin-Nelson, during her six years as the spiritual leader of New Covenant, has inspired increased membership, participation, and support; and
Whereas, she led the effort for the new sanctuary and rightfully officiated at the dedication of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA) Sanctuary in Sumter County Sunday, April 20, 1997. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the membership and leadership of New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA) of Sumter County on the occasion of the dedication of the church's new sanctuary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Reverend Mungin-Nelson on behalf of the congregation of New Covenant Presbyterian Church (USA).
