A HOUSE RESOLUTION

COMMEMORATING THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE COUNTY OF GREENWOOD, AND EXTENDING BEST WISHES TO THE CITIZENS OF THIS GREAT COUNTY ON ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, at midnight on June 3, 1897, Greenwood County came into being as a new "judicial and election district...with the seat of justice in the town of Greenwood."; and

Whereas, this was the culmination of a long struggle by the people of this beautiful area of South Carolina to create a new county; Greenwood County was part of the land purchased from the Cherokee Indians by the provincial governor, James Glen, in 1747 all their lands south and east of Long Cane Creek; and

Whereas, in 1857, the town of Greenwood, which had originally been settled in 1824 by Judge John McGehee and his wife, was chartered with about three hundred inhabitants; in the final days of the 1897 legislative session in Columbia, the General Assembly passed an act establishing Greenwood County, and the act was signed into law on March 2, 1897; county officials were elected in a special election in 1897; however, Greenwood County had to wait nearly two years before electing members to the South Carolina House of Representatives since total membership in the House was limited to one hundred twenty-four and Abbeville County had sent five representatives to the state Legislature to be in session through 1898; and

Whereas, the county lines for Greenwood were changed in February 1898 when two townships in Abbeville County and one in Edgefield County (which had voted in May 1897 to join Greenwood County) and a part of Cokesbury Township (which had voted in November 1897 to join the new county) were included; the Greenwood County boundaries have changed only once since then in 1916 when McCormick County was formed from parts of Greenwood, Abbeville, and Edgefield counties; and

Whereas, with a general history that is approximately two hundred fifty years old, Greenwood County has grown and progressed in every significant area since its creation as a county of South Carolina in 1897; the county is one of the loveliest and friendliest places to be found anywhere and continues to be a Palmetto State leader; and

Whereas, the Greenwood County Centennial Commission is sponsoring the Centennial Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, May 31, 1997, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Greenwood Courthouse Plaza; this promises to be a grand and joyous occasion; all of the citizens of South Carolina take pride in the fact that Greenwood will turn one hundred years old as a county on June 3, 1997, because Greenwood's history is South Carolina's history and Greenwood County's future is the Palmetto State's future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commemorate the centennial celebration of the County of Greenwood and extend best wishes to the citizens of this great county on its one hundredth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Greenwood County Centennial Commission in care of The Honorable Emmett F. Brooks, Chairman.
