CONGRATULATING MARGARET BRACKETT OF NEWBERRY COUNTY ON RECEIVING THE 1997 SILVER SCALES OF JUSTICE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD AND COMMENDING HER FOR HER MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO HER COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Ms. Brackett began working with young people several decades ago by helping young women earn scholarships to aid them in furthering their education; and

Whereas, Margaret hosts a radio show on WKMG-AM in Newberry County entitled "On the Move with Margaret" which she uses to highlight victims' issues throughout our State that include juvenile crime, sexual assault, domestic violence, the South Carolina Victims Rights Constitutional Amendment, and post-conviction issues; and

Whereas, she is an active Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) South Carolina volunteer, was instrumental in the establishment of the successful MADD Newberry County Chapter, is Chairperson of her local chapter of MADD, and Vice Chairperson of MADD South Carolina State Executive Committee; and

Whereas, as a MADD Victim Advocate, she interacts directly with drunk driving victims and provides numerous services which include caring, listening, and court accompaniment; and

Whereas, Margaret has been instrumental in organizing a Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope each December for drunk driving victims which is attended by law enforcement officials, local politicians, clergy, state officials, and local agencies that provide support for crime victims; and

Whereas, she is actively involved in MADD community education programs, blankets Newberry County with red ribbons each December, engages florists, other businesses, churches, and schools in preventative education programs during proms, graduation activities, and the Keep It a Safe Summer awareness campaign; and

Whereas, Margaret has helped maintain the MADD Newberry County Chapter as a very active organization which proudly boasts having the entire Newberry County Legislative Delegation as members; and

Whereas, because of her involvement in and contributions to many community activities, the Newberry Jaycees named her "My Favorite Senior Citizen"; and
