TO CONGRATULATE THE ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS OF CHOPPEE HIGH SCHOOL OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY ON CELEBRATING THE SCHOOL'S FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
Whereas, on September 5, 1957, Choppee School opened its doors to forty-five teachers and nine hundred forty-three students under the leadership of its principal, Maudest K. Squires, who served as principal until 1974; and
Whereas, the establishment of Choppee School would not have been possible without the vision of Maudest K. Squires, a former supervisor of elementary schools for Georgetown County who fought diligently to provide access to a high school education for children living in rural communities; and
Whereas, when it opened in 1957, Choppee served both as a high school and elementary school that provided a well-rounded curriculum that included district-wide dramatics and musicals, home economic contests, and intramural sports; and
Whereas, during the succeeding years, Choppee experienced tremendous growth with the construction of a gymnasium, annex, and a vocational shop and the addition of football and track to its athletic program; and
Whereas, the administration, faculty, staff, and students of Choppee High School continue to work to promote academic excellence. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the administration, faculty, staff, and students of Choppee High School of Georgetown County on celebrating the school's fortieth anniversary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Choppee High School in care of its principal, Ms. Mary M. Rice.
