A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING MARYLAND STATE SENATOR GLORIA GARY LAWLAH, A NATIVE OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HER DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP RECORD AND ACHIEVEMENTS.

Whereas, Maryland State Senator Gloria Gary Lawlah was born and reared in the City of Newberry, County of Newberry, State of South Carolina, the daughter of the late Eugene Calvin Gary and the late Erline Guess Gary; and

Whereas, Senator Lawlah was elected in 1990 to represent the 26th Legislative District, Prince George's County, in the Maryland State Senate; she previously served as a delegate in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1986 to 1990; and

Whereas, she graduated with a B.S. degree from Hampton University and received her M.A. degree from Trinity College; she has also completed post graduate work at George Washington University; and

Whereas, Senator Lawlah organized a massive voter registration drive which registered thousands of new residents in southern Prince George's County, and she has strongly encouraged and supported other African-American candidates for elected office; and

Whereas, in 1991 Senator Lawlah was chosen for the Prince George's County Women's Hall of Fame and in 1992 she assisted in the movement registering 50,000 new Maryland voters and was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York pledged to Governor Bill Clinton; she also served as a Clinton Delegate to the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago; and

Whereas, Senator Lawlah has sponsored or cosponsored legislation supporting stiffer penalties for criminals, stronger hand gun control, collective bargaining on behalf of state employees, child care and day care services, and supporting a return to neighborhood schools; and

Whereas, she serves as a member of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee and the Senate Executive Nominations Committee, as Treasurer of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus, and as a board member of the Council of Governments representing the Maryland General Assembly; and

Whereas, Senator Lawlah is married to John W. Lawlah III, and they have three children, John Wesley, Gloria Gene, and Gary McCarrell; the family attends Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Maryland State Senator Gloria Gary Lawlah, a native of the City and County of Newberry, South Carolina, and commend her on her distinguished career, leadership record, achievements, and outstanding service to the citizens of the County of Prince George's and the State of Maryland.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to State Senator Gloria Gary Lawlah.
