CONGRATULATING THE SOUTH CAROLINA AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CONSORTIUM (S.C. AHEC) ON ITS TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AND COMMENDING S.C. AHEC FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH CARE THROUGH EDUCATION.
Whereas, in 1998, the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (S.C. AHEC) marks its twenty-fifth anniversary and celebrates a quarter century of excellence in health care through education; and
Whereas, the twenty-fifth anniversary of S.C. AHEC will be marked and celebrated on March 19-20 1998, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC continues to be a model integrated and collaborative educational system that builds the capacity for optimal health in the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, an innovative statewide system that blends community health service with the education of health professionals, S.C. AHEC is a cooperative effort of the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina, Palmetto State community hospitals, and local, nonprofit consortia; and
Whereas, since 1973 S.C. AHEC has grown to include seven regional AHEC centers, a health care recruitment and retention center, four free-standing family practice residency programs, and three multiple residency sites, as well as the Central Office located on the MUSC campus in Charleston; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC won the National Pew Foundation Award of Excellence in 1997; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC's mission is to improve the quality and accessibility of health care for the communities of South Carolina through a system of community-academic partnerships whose central purpose is the recruitment, education, and retention of primary health care providers; this is accomplished through improved quality of health care in the State with an emphasis on primary care, elimination of medically underserved areas, and achievement of population parity in the State's health professions workforce; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC has rendered a record of splendid accomplishments over the past quarter century and is highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium on its twenty-fifth anniversary and commends S.C. AHEC for excellence in health care through education.
