A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF GEORGE YOUNG, SR., OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, WHO IN HIS NINETY YEARS UNFAILINGLY HAS BEEN A HARD WORKER, A LOVING FAMILY MAN, A FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN, A GENEROUS NEIGHBOR, AND A STELLAR EXAMPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S EXCEPTIONAL CITIZENS.

Whereas, George Young, Sr., was born on June 3, 1908, in Greenville County, the fourth of eleven children of Mr. and Mrs. Bodie Fuller Young; and

Whereas, he began at an early age to appreciate the rewards of hard work, working a farm in the afternoons after attending school at Flat Rock Baptist School and St. Autum School at Reedy Fork Baptist Church, raising hogs, cows, and chickens and growing corn, cotton, grain, and vegetables; and

Whereas, his employment included stints at Piedmont Mill Company, P&N Railroad, Donaldson Air Force Base, and, finally, more than twenty years with Seaboard Railroad; and

Whereas, that employment supplemented his farming income for a growing family that eventually blessed him and his loving wife, Alma Harrison, with nine children; and

Whereas, their sixty-two-year union began on Christmas Day of 1929, and today boasts, in addition to their nine children, thirty-two grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Young joined the Usher Board of Flat Rock Baptist Church at the age of fifteen; and

Whereas, he has served his church faithfully since then in a number of capacities: custodian for seventy-eight years, deacon for sixty-four years, Chairman of the Deacon Board for ten years, choir member for more than seventy-four years, treasurer for nineteen years, ward leader for sixty years, President of BTU, and a delegate to the Reedy River Baptist Association since childhood; and

Whereas, his neighbors know him as a Godly man who is always generous with his time, processing meat for them, registering them to vote, and supporting their causes; and

Whereas, when he was farming he was also generous with the fruits and vegetables of his labors--a generosity gratefully attested to by his pastor and admirer, Representative Willie B. McMahand; and

Whereas, Deacon Young is a man whose life brings honor to this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly celebrate the life of George Young, Sr., of Greenville County, who in his ninety years unfailingly has been a hard worker, a loving family man, a faithful Christian, a generous neighbor, and a stellar example of South Carolina's exceptional citizens.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Young.
