A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND LAUREN LUCAS OF LEXINGTON COUNTY AND A STUDENT AT BROOKLAND-CAYCE HIGH SCHOOL FOR HER SELECTION AS ONE OF TWO TOP YOUTH VOLUNTEERS IN SOUTH CAROLINA FOR 1998 AND TO CONGRATULATE HER ON HER RECEIPT OF THE SILVER MEDALLION FROM THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM.

Whereas, Lauren Lucas, an esteemed resident of Lexington County and a student at Brookland-Cayce High School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a silver medallion signifying the top State 1998 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and

Whereas, this prestigious award, presented by The Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

Whereas, Ms. Lucas earned this award by giving generously of her time and energy to the establishment of Kids Accepting Challenges Today (Kids A.C.T.), a community service organization intended to offer flexible and varied projects for interested young people; and

Whereas, Kids A.C.T. was created to serve as a resource for young volunteers, offering information about local organizations and individuals who need help raising money, caring for the sick and homeless, or comforting terminally ill children; and

Whereas, today, Ms. Lucas writes and distributes a newsletter and updates a website to keep members and potential members up to date on service projects; and

Whereas, the daughter of Jerry and Deborah Lucas of West Columbia, Lauren is also an honor roll student in the Junior Class at Brookland-Cayce High School; and

Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Ms. Lucas who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend Lauren Lucas of Lexington County and a student at Brookland-Cayce High School for her selection as one of two top youth volunteers in South Carolina for 1998 and congratulate her on her receipt of the silver medallion from the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Lucas.
