MEMORIALIZING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE UNITED KINGDOM, AND THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND TO ENCOURAGE THE COMING TOGETHER OF THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND, THE PROMOTION OF THE END OF PARTITION, AND THE END OF EMERGENCY LEGISLATION AND RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION.
Whereas, United States Presidential Envoy George Mitchell is currently chairing talks aimed at resolving the Anglo-Irish conflict; and
Whereas, the support of Americans for peace in Ireland is demonstrated with the words and deeds of no fewer than seven recent Presidents, and many members of congress, and state and local legislators across the nation; and
Whereas, this care and concern for peace in Ireland is backed by American taxpayer investment in the International Fund for Ireland; and
Whereas, mutual respect for human and civil rights and a fundamental change in governmental institutions and practices are key to peace in Ireland. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, endorse the interest and involvement of the United States in the Irish peace process and the pursuit of a new democracy in Ireland through peace, justice, and reconciliation.
Be it further resolved that the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland are memorialized to encourage the coming together of the people of Ireland, the promotion of the end of partition, and the end of emergency legislation and religious discrimination.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland.
