A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO DAWN HOFFSTETTER, A STUDENT AT LAKESIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN ANDERSON COUNTY, UPON BEING NAMED ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S TOP TWO 1998 YOUTH VOLUNTEERS BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND THE PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE COMPANY OF AMERICA.

Whereas, the General Assembly is proud and excited to learn that Dawn Hoffstetter of Lakeside Middle School in Anderson has been selected as our state's top middle-level volunteer, along with Lauren Lucas of Brookland Cayce High School as our state's top high school-level volunteer, in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide recognition program; and

Whereas, this outstanding and loving youth is the fourteen-year-old daughter of Richard and Pat Hoffstetter of Anderson; and

Whereas, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and The Prudential Insurance Company of America are proud to be able to bring this well-deserved recognition to young people like Dawn, who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities. More than eleven thousand students were considered for awards in this year's program; and

Whereas, Dawn, inspired by a relative's disability, volunteered with a pre-school for disabled children. She spent part of her summer break assisting the teachers with various activities. Dawn, who had to learn sign language to communicate with many of the children, learned that a disability does not keep a child from playing or learning. As she so eloquently stated, "Its just harder for them than for other people, and all they need is a little extra encouragement and love"; and

Whereas, as one of South Carolina's top honorees, Dawn will receive one thousand dollars, a silver medallion, and a trip in May to Washington, D.C., where she and Lauren will join the two top honorees -- one middle-level and one high school youth -- from each of the other states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico for four days of national recognition events. America's top ten youth volunteers will be named at that time; and

Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people such as Dawn Hoffstetter who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; and

Whereas, the General Assembly, as well as the citizens of Anderson County and the Palmetto State, are appreciative and grateful to this fine young lady, Dawn Hoffstetter, on her outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, and extend best wishes for her continued success and happiness. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sincere congratulations to Dawn Hoffstetter, a student at Lakeside Middle School in Anderson County, upon being named one of South Carolina's top two 1998 youth volunteers by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and The Prudential Insurance Company of America.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Dawn Hoffstetter and to Mr. Don R. Saxon, Principal of Lakeside Middle School.
