A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND BEST WISHES AND APPRECIATION TO THE HONORABLE JOHN SUMMER HUGGINS OF POMARIA, A DISTINGUISHED SON OF NEWBERRY COUNTY AND OF NEWBERRY COLLEGE, AN ABLE PRACTITIONER OF THE LAW, A PROMINENT AND PROGRESSIVE LEGISLATOR, A DEDICATED CHURCHMAN, AND A LOVING AND DEVOTED HUSBAND, FATHER, AND GRANDFATHER.

Whereas, the Honorable John Summer Huggins of Pomaria represented Newberry County with great distinction in the House of Representatives from 1952 to 1954; and

Whereas, he was born on May 1, 1926 at Newberry, the son of Herman H. Huggins and Marie Summer Huggins; he was reared on Pomaria Plantation, the home of his forebear, William Summer, who founded in 1840 the famous Pomaria Nurseries and developed a variety of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and seeds; and

Whereas, Representative Huggins graduated from Pomaria High School in 1943, from Newberry College in 1946, and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1950; and

Whereas, having been admitted to the Bar of South Carolina in January of 1950, he practiced law as a member of the Newberry County Bar until 1955; during this early period in his career, he served in the General Assembly for two years; and

Whereas, he was married in Estill on November 14, 1959 to the former Doris Gunter; they have two children, Nancy Huggins Wessinger and John S. Huggins, Jr., and six grandchildren; and

Whereas, he continued his outstanding public service career as Counsel for the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Disability Determination Division, for a period of twenty years from 1955 to 1975; thereafter, he reentered the private practice of law in Irmo; and

Whereas, he is a long-time and faithful member of Pomaria Lutheran Church, having served as Vice Chair of Church Council, as a Sunday School teacher for twenty-six years, and as chair of many church committees; and

Whereas, always interested and active in community affairs, he has served as President of the Pomaria Ruritan Club, as an adult leader for Troop 76 of the Boy Scouts of America, and as Attorney for the Town of Peak; and

Whereas, John Summer Huggins is an outstanding individual and an admired and beloved gentleman; he has served his community and State well for many years, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to accord him special recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extends best wishes and appreciation to the Honorable John Summer Huggins of Pomaria, a distinguished son of Newberry County and of Newberry College, an able practitioner of the law, a prominent and progressive legislator, a dedicated churchman, and a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Honorable John Summer Huggins.
