EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO MR. JOHN WHITE OF SPARTANBURG, OWNER OF THE BEACON DRIVE-IN RESTAURANT FOR FIFTY-TWO YEARS, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF SPARTANBURG AND VISITORS FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES, AND CONGRATULATING HIM FOR HIS OPENHANDED, GENEROUS SPIRIT THAT HAS BECOME INGRAINED IN SPARTANBURG'S CULTURE, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT ON MAY 1, 1998.
Whereas, Mr. John White, owner of the Beacon Drive-In for fifty-two years, recently announced to his employees that he has sold the restaurant to two new owners who will take over the landmark restaurant in May, 1998; and
Whereas, the Beacon opened November 28, 1946, on West Main Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina, and, as a testimonial to its outstanding success over the years, it now occupies its third building on Reidville Road; and
Whereas, in addition to Mr. White's openhanded, generous spirit, the Beacon's chili cheeseburgers, onion rings, and iced tea have become and are ingrained in Spartanburg's culture; and
Whereas, the Beacon under the management of John White has served presidential candidates John Connelly, Bob Dole, and Phil Gramm, once served three hundred sailors in the United States Navy for free, and has even been profiled by Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" series; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly express their appreciation to Mr. John White for his fifty-two years of outstanding service to the citizens of Spartanburg, and congratulate him for his openhanded, generous spirit that has become ingrained in Spartanburg's culture on the occasion of his retirement on May 1, 1998. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their appreciation to Mr. John White, of Spartanburg, owner of the Beacon Drive-In restaurant for fifty-two years, for his outstanding service to the citizens of Spartanburg and visitors from all over the United States, and congratulate him for his openhanded, generous spirit that has become ingrained in Spartanburg's culture, on the occasion of his retirement on May 1, 1998.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. John White of Spartanburg.
