A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING MRS. RUTH CORLEY SIMONS OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HER OUTSTANDING WORK WITH V.V. REID NURSERY AND KINDERGARTEN IN COLUMBIA AND FOR HER MANY OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND DECLARING MARCH 18, 1998, AS "RUTH CORLEY SIMONS DAY" IN HER HONOR.

Whereas, Mrs. Ruth Corley Simons, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Silas P. Corley, was born in Irmo; she grew up in a large family where she was one of ten children; she attended Harbison College School and is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School of Columbia has continued to study early childhood development at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons is a dedicated and loyal member of Reid Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Columbia where she has served since the mid 1950's; she is a strong Christian leader in her church, a steward, Adult Sunday School teacher, and member of the Missionary Society and Senior Choir; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons started her career at V.V. Reid Nursery and Kindergarten about forty-two years ago in 1956; she first worked in the capacity of a teacher of the two and one-half year old class and later was appointed director; she dearly loves the school and all of the children and has touched many of their lives in a loving and positive way; God gave her great wisdom and vision to see much growth and development at the school; Mrs. Simons has worked very hard for the outstanding and fine reputation of the V.V. Reid Kindergarten and Elementary School; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons was married to Freddie Simons, deceased; together they had three children, Jean, Freddie, and Beverly, and five grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mrs. Simons enjoys studying the Bible, traveling, being with her family, and helping children, the elderly, sick, and less fortunate; her motto is: "If there be any good deed or service I may render, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again."; and

Whereas, in recognition of her excellent work and dedication, Reid Chapel A.M.E. Church named its new family life facility "The Ruth C. Simons Family Life Center" at dedication ceremonies on Sunday, March 8, 1998; and

Whereas, Ruth Corley Simons is a remarkable individual who gives freely and generously of her time, talents, and resources for the good of the community; she is a kind, caring, and compassionate lady who is greatly respected, admired, and loved, and it is indeed fitting that she be recognized in a special way for all that she has accomplished and contributed to the community throughout her life. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes Mrs. Ruth Corley Simons of Columbia for her outstanding work with V.V. Reid Nursery and Kindergarten in Columbia and for her many other accomplishments and declares March 18, 1998, as "Ruth Corley Simons Day" in her honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Simons.
