A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE DARLINGTON COUNTY COUNCILWOMAN WILHELMINA P. JOHNSON ON THE OCCASION OF HER BEING SELECTED AS A RECIPIENT OF THE WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD BY THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE COMMISSION ON WOMEN.

Whereas, the Honorable Wilhelmina P. Johnson, a Darlington County Councilwoman and former vice chairman of the Darlington County Council and a retired educator, taught home economics in the Darlington County School District for twenty-eight years and served as a home economist with the Clemson University Extension Service for eleven years; and

Whereas, the Governor's Office Commission on Women selected six from twenty-one nominations from across the State for the prestigious Women of Achievement Award made to women of distinction for their outstanding contributions to their homes, communities, State, and professions; and

Whereas, Wilhelmina P. Johnson, in addition to her role as an educator, expressed her concern and love for her community by establishing the Darlington County Cultural Realism Complex, Inc., a chartered, private, nonprofit corporation that provides year-round educational, recreational, and cultural activities to the county and State; and

Whereas, in addition to service on the board for the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission and as an executive board member of the South Carolina Black Arts Coalition, Wilhelmina P. Johnson has also been recognized nationally for her contributions to her community by being honored in 1996 by CBS Morning News as part of its "Hero of the Day" program, by being named Woman of the Year by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and Teacher of the Year by South Carolina Consumer Education. In addition, she was a South Carolina Human Relations Award winner; and

Whereas, she is a member of the Darlington County Task Force for Progress, the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce, and the National Council of Negro Women, and is the mother of four children. She earned both a bachelor's degree in home economics and a master's degree in education from South Carolina State University. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend and congratulate Darlington County Councilwoman Wilhelmina P. Johnson on the occasion of her being selected as a recipient of the Women of Achievement Award by the Governor's Office Commission on Women.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Wilhelmina P. Johnson.
