A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXTENDING THE BEST WISHES AND HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO OUR CURRENT MISS SOUTH CAROLINA, JANET LEA POWERS OF HARTSVILLE, ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1998, ON THE SPECIAL OCCASION OF "MISS SOUTH CAROLINA APPRECIATION DAY".

Whereas, Janet Lea Powers of Hartsville is currently representing the State of South Carolina as our "Miss South Carolina"; and

Whereas, Miss Powers graduated from Hartsville High School and has continued to further her education by attending Florence-Darlington Technical College and Coker College; and

Whereas, Miss Powers' academic goal is to attain a major in communications and pursue a career in public relations; and

Whereas, Miss Powers' aspiration for the future is to be a successful wife and mother -- family is very important to her; and

Whereas, Janet is a self-taught pianist and vocalist and during her reign as Miss Southern 500, she had the opportunity to sing the National Anthem on ESPN before the TranSouth Financial 400 race in 1997; and

Whereas, as Miss South Carolina, Janet's platform has been "Drive Toward Excellence" -- using the letters in the word drive, this program spells out basic principles to achieve excellence, i.e., Dreams/goals, Respect for yourself and others, Inspiration, Victim (don't be to drugs and alcohol), and Effort. Beginning with the realization of a dream, "DTE" encourages young people to keep their bodies and minds clear of harmful influences while working toward their goals; and

Whereas, Janet speaks to elementary, middle, and high school children throughout the Palmetto State ; and

Whereas, Miss South Carolina, Janet Powers is a goodwill ambassador and role model of our State, and a representative of the State of South Carolina that is making a difference; and

Whereas, we are extremely proud of Janet Lea Powers and are delighted to recognize our "Miss South Carolina" who has the highest qualities of intelligence, poise, beauty, and involvement in her community and State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their best wishes and heartfelt congratulations to our current Miss South Carolina, Janet Lea Powers of Hartsville, on Wednesday, April 22, 1998, on the special occasion of "Miss South Carolina Appreciation Day".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Miss South Carolina, Janet Lea Powers.
