A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE CHRIS G. HITOPOULOS OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR OVER FIFTY-FIVE YEARS OF OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP, UNPARALLELED VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT, AND EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SPORT OF BOXING IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Chris G. Hitopoulos was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on August 24, 1924; and

Whereas, his childhood hobby of boxing developed into a lifelong avocation with Mr. Hitopoulos now having over fifty-five years of boxing experience; and

Whereas, his boxing career began in 1942 when he became a member of the United States Army Air Corps Boxing Team, continuing on the team through 1945; and

Whereas, Mr. Hitopoulos boxed for the University of South Carolina from 1947 through 1948, was assistant coach of the boxing team from 1949 through 1953, and was coach in 1976; and

Whereas, in 1954, he became a coach and trainee for professional boxers, and in the 1970's and 1980's Mr. Hitopoulos coached many United States Boxing Teams and also for the United States Amateur Boxing Federation, and served as a volunteer coach to the Korea Amateur Boxing Federation; and

Whereas, Mr. Hitopoulos' love for the sport and his superb ability as a leader has placed him in the longstanding role of Chairman of the South Carolina Golden Gloves from 1966 through the present, Director of Boxing at the Memorial Youth Center in Columbia from 1965 through 1990, Chairman of the Richland County Boxing Commission from 1969 through 1986, Chairman of the South Carolina Amateur Association from 1970 through 1982, and Chief Commissioner of the South Carolina Athletic Commission from 1984 through 1996; and

Whereas, not only has he served the Palmetto State and the sport very well, he has brought much pride and recognition to South Carolina by his many accomplishments during his illustrious career; and

Whereas, among his accomplishments are many firsts: He brought to South Carolina the first Junior Olympics Boxing Tournament and the first W.B.C. Championship Boxing a production that was televised worldwide; and

Whereas, Mr. Hitopoulos has met numerous world boxing champions, many of whom he has been instrumental in bringing to South Carolina, among them: Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks, Mike Tyson, Mark Breeland, Martin Starlings, Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe Frazier, Pinkton Thomas, and Lennox Lewis; and

Whereas, South Carolina has been the fortunate beneficiary of Mr. Hitopoulos' great love for and dedication to boxing, and thus, it is proper and fitting that the General Assembly recognize his tireless efforts, his great generosity, and his unparalleled commitment to giving the best of boxing to all of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives by this resolution, recognizes Chris G. Hitopoulos for over fifty-five years of outstanding leadership, unparalleled volunteer commitment, and exceptional contributions to the sport of boxing in the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chris G. Hitopoulos.
