A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. JAMES C. HITE, ALUMNI PROFESSOR OF AGRICULTURAL AND APPLIED ECONOMICS AT CLEMSON UNIVERSITY AND SENIOR FELLOW AT THE STROM THURMOND INSTITUTE OF GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS, FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS A TEACHER, AUTHOR, CONSULTANT, AND CIVIC LEADER UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with deep regret that Dr. James C. Hite, one of this state's most distinguished professors and economic and governmental experts will be retiring in May of this year; and

Whereas, Dr. Hite is alumni professor of agricultural and applied economics at Clemson University and a senior fellow of the Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs; and

Whereas, Dr. Hite is a native of Kingsport, Tennessee, received his B.S. in agricultural economics from Clemson University in 1963, an M.A. in history from Emory University in 1964, and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Clemson University in 1966. In 1969-1970, he was a post-doctoral fellow in regional science at Harvard University, and in 1985 he was a Gordon Fellow at Deakin University in Australia; and

Whereas, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in natural resource economics and public finance, conducts research in state and local government finance and regional resource development matters, and is an author of numerous books and professional articles; and

Whereas, he is a person of tremendous ability and interests who in addition to his academic endeavors has served in federal, state, and corporate positions of responsibility where he brought deserved credit not only upon himself but upon Clemson University and the State of South Carolina as well; and

Whereas, Dr. Hite is perhaps most widely known as one of South Carolina's foremost experts on state and local governmental affairs and his advice and counsel have been appreciated for decades by those who are in public office charged with the responsibility of making public policy decisions affecting state and local government; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize this truly outstanding South Carolinian for his contributions to Clemson University, the Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs, and the State of South Carolina upon his retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. James C. Hite, alumni professor of agricultural and applied economics at Clemson University and senior fellow at the Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs, for his distinguished career as a teacher, author, consultant, and civic leader upon the occasion of his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Hite.
