A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE LAURENCE MANNING ACADEMY SWAMPCATS VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM OF CLARENDON COUNTY ON WINNING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (SCISAA) DIVISION AAA STATE BASKETBALL CROWN FOR 1997.

Whereas, the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats Varsity Girls Basketball team of Clarendon County defeated the Cavaliers of Robert E. Lee 55-52 to capture the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (SCISAA) Division AAA state basketball crown for 1997; and

Whereas, the Swampcats ended the 1997 campaign with a 23-6 record; and

Whereas, Jack Gibson is the Head Coach of the Laurence Manning Varsity Girls Basketball team and his assistant coaches are Kim Seebeck and Morgan Watt with Jean Robinson serving as scorekeeper; and

Whereas, Jack Gibson is the school's athletic director, and Eugene Nalley is the headmaster; and

Whereas, the 1997 Swampcats varsity girls basketball roster included Kendra Rowland, All Conference-Sumter Daily Item, All Tournament-Player of the Year, All State-Sports Report Player of the Year, North-South All Star, 1,500 Career Points, and 1,000 Career Rebounds; Ann Geddings, Nancy Margaret Jones, Lucia Rawlinson, Jessie Gainey, Sumter Item All Area-All Conference, North-South All Star; Lauren Bridges, Sumter Item All Area, All Conference, and All State; Melanie Griffin, Alison McCord, Rebecca Stewart, Paige Jordan, and JoAnn Weinberg; and

Whereas, the 1997 Varsity Girls Basketball team exhibited a team spirit and enthusiasm which was a cornerstone in allowing them to fulfill their destiny as a championship team; and

Whereas, this team has worked hard and is especially deserving of special commendation as state basketball champions in SCISAA Division AAA. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats Varsity Girls Basketball team of Clarendon County on winning the SCISAA Division AAA state basketball crown for 1997.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each of the varsity players listed above, to the team's head coach, each of the assistant coaches, the athletic director, and the headmaster, all as named above.
