A HOUSE RESOLUTION

WELCOMING THE HONORABLE ANTONIN SCALIA, ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, TO SOUTH CAROLINA AND CONGRATULATING HIM ON RECEIVING THE PALMETTO LEADERSHIP AWARD DURING HIS VISIT TO THE PALMETTO STATE.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives have learned that the Honorable Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, will visit our State May 9, 1998, to receive the Palmetto Leadership Award from the South Carolina Policy Council; and

Whereas, Justice Antonin Scalia was educated at Georgetown University and the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), where he received his A.B. degree in 1957; in 1960, he earned his law degree from Harvard University, where he served as Note Editor of the Harvard Law Review; he was also a Sheldon Fellow at Harvard from 1960 to 1961; and

Whereas, Justice Scalia has had an illustrious teaching career including serving as professor of law at the University of Virginia from 1967 to 1974, visiting professor of law at Georgetown University in 1977, professor of law at the University of Chicago from 1977 to 1982, and visiting professor of law at Stanford University from 1980 to 1981; and

Whereas, he has served as General Counsel, Office of Telecommunications Policy, Executive Office of the President from 1971 to 1972; chairman, Administration Conference of the United States from 1972 to 1974; and Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel, United States Department of Justice from 1974 to 1977; and

Whereas, President Reagan recognized Justice Scalia's judicial ability by nominating him to serve on the United States Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit; Justice Scalia assumed this office August 17, 1982; and

Whereas, exemplifying all of the attributes of a model jurist, Justice Scalia was nominated again by President Reagan as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and took office September 26, 1986; his presence on the highest court of the land has had a tremendous impact in the interpretation and application of the law; he is deeply admired and respected as a learned jurist; he is, at the same time, a humble and devoted public servant; and, most of all, he is regarded as a great American; it is indeed an honor for the citizens of South Carolina to have Justice Scalia as a guest in our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, welcomes the Honorable Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, to South Carolina and congratulates him on receiving the Palmetto Leadership Award during his visit to the Palmetto State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Justice Antonin Scalia.
