A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. J. GRADY RANDOLPH OF GAFFNEY, PRESIDENT OF J. GRADY RANDOLPH, INC., ON HIS BEING SELECTED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA TRUCKING ASSOCIATION AS THE 1998 MOTOR CARRIER EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, Mr. James Grady Randolph of Gaffney began his working career driving a loaded truck from the old limestone quarry to the O'Neal Street railroad loading area in Gaffney when he was twelve years old, and has spent his entire working career in the trucking industry; and

Whereas, the Randolph trucking company is truly a family business with three generations of Randolph family members taking part in the growth of the Cherokee County trucking firm. It was founded in Gaffney in 1935 by Joe Grady Randolph and his wife Martha, and now is known as J. Grady Randolph, Inc.; and

Whereas, in 1947 after World War II, Mr. J. Grady Randolph decided to branch out on his own and became engaged in hauling lime, fertilizer, and stone throughout Cherokee and surrounding counties, thereby capitalizing on the great potential he saw in the trucking industry; and

Whereas, the company, J. Grady Randolph, Inc., has experienced its greatest growth under the leadership and business acumen of Mr. J. Grady Randolph, expanding from a small dumptruck oriented operation to one of the largest specialized haulers in the State. The company now is probably the largest hauler of prestressed concrete in the Southeast, is based in a new complex in Gaffney with satellite offices in Rock Hill, Pacolet, and Greenville, South Carolina; Hiram, Georgia; and Lavergne, Tennessee, with over one hundred employees and a fleet of almost one hundred company trucks and more than forty lease trucks; and

Whereas, understanding the importance of giving back to the community, Mr. Randolph has served for the past six years as a commissioner on the Gaffney Board of Public Works and also has served as a Deacon and member of the Finance Committee of the First Baptist Church of Gaffney; and

Whereas, all of the Randolph family have been active in the South Carolina Trucking Association but none more than Mr. Grady Randolph who has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Trucking Association for over two decades, giving unselfishly of his time, talent, and considerable energy in promoting the trucking industry's organization and its agenda; and

Whereas, Mr. Grady Randolph, on countless occasions, has attended meetings, visited with elected officials, written letters, and made telephone calls on behalf of the trucking industry, is regarded by the leaders of the industry as a loyal and dedicated participant, and also is regarded by the staff of the association as a tremendously consistent supporter and confidant who comes through time after time with a smile and a humble and sincere heart. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Mr. J. Grady Randolph of Gaffney, President of J. Grady Randolph, Inc., on the occasion of his being selected by the South Carolina Trucking Association as the 1998 motor carrier executive of the year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. J. Grady Randolph.
