AUTHORIZING THE COMMISSIONING OF A PORTRAIT OF THE HONORABLE JOHN W. DRUMMOND OF NINETY-SIX TO BE PLACED IN THE SENATE CHAMBER AS A TRIBUTE TO A PATRIOT, A MILITARY HERO, A LOYAL AND COMPASSIONATE PUBLIC SERVANT AND A DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN.
Whereas, the Honorable John W. Drummond of Ninety-Six has been a distinguished member of the Senate since 1967; and
Whereas, he is one of the State's outstanding leaders and statesmen of the modern era; and
Whereas, he served in the House of Representatives of this State in the 1965-1966 session; and
Whereas, he was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate on January 9, 1996, and has served continuously ever since in that office; and
Whereas, he is one of the most highly decorated veterans of World War II ever to have served in public office in this State and is known and deeply admired for his connection to the common man, his great compassion, dedication, and service to humanity; and
Whereas, John Drummond's many contributions to the well being of the State are greatly deserving of tribute and permanent recognition in a special manner in the hallowed halls of the Senate Chamber. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate authorizes the commissioning of a portrait of the Honorable John W. Drummond of Ninety-Six to be placed in the Senate Chamber as a tribute to this great South Carolinian and distinguished statesman.
Be it further resolved that a committee of seven members of the Senate, two of whom shall be members of the Senate Operations and Management Committee and four of whom shall be from the Senate at large, all of whom shall be appointed by the Chairman of the Senate Operations and Management Committee who shall serve, ex officio, as chairman of the Portrait Committee. The committee shall handle the arrangements and details of the hanging of a portrait including, but not limited to, the location for the portrait and an appropriate ceremony to commemorate the unveiling and dedication of the portrait. Be it further resolved that the Clerk of the Senate shall provide such assistance and services as the Committee shall direct.
