A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MISS KRISTA SHIRLEY OF LEXINGTON COUNTY AND A SENIOR AT LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL, WHO HAS RECEIVED THE BRONZE MEDALLION AS A DISTINGUISHED FINALIST FOR THE YEAR 2000 IN THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS, A NATIONWIDE PROGRAM HONORING YOUNG PEOPLE FOR OUTSTANDING ACTS OF VOLUNTEERISM.

Whereas, Krista Shirley, a resident of Gilbert, South Carolina, and a senior at Lexington High School, is one of four South Carolina students recognized as a Distinguished Finalist for her impressive community service activities. Each will receive an engraved bronze medallion; and

Whereas, these awards are part of a broad initiative created by Prudential to encourage young people to become involved in community service; and

Whereas, all public and private middle level and high schools in the country, along with all Girl Scout Councils and county 4-H organizations, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award this past November. Local honorees were then reviewed by state-level judges, who selected state honorees and distinguished finalists based on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact, and personal growth; and

Whereas, more than twenty thousand high school and middle level students were considered for awards in this year's program; and

Whereas, Krista Shirley was nominated for this prestigious award because she has established and leads a support group for individuals with eating disorders and their families; and

Whereas, Krista exemplifies the best traits of those who give of themselves as volunteers. She has given freely and most generously of her time and talents to others within her community, county, and this great State; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are extremely proud of Krista Shirley and are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to salute her and accord her special recognition for her commitment to others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sincere congratulations to Miss Krista Shirley of Lexington County and a senior at Lexington High School, who has received the Bronze Medallion as a Distinguished Finalist for the year 2000 in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Krista Shirley.
