TO HONOR AND COMMEND CINDI ROSS SCOPPE, ASSOCIATE EDITOR OF THE STATE NEWSPAPER, ON BEING AWARDED THE "2000 AMBROSE E. GONZALES AWARD", AND ON BEING CHOSEN THE "1999 SOUTH CAROLINA JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR" BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA PRESS ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, February, 2000, was an outstanding month for Cindi Ross Scoppe as she received well-deserved praise and acknowledgment from her peers for her accomplishments and her work as a tireless journalist covering South Carolina legislative politics. She was awarded two highly coveted journalism awards for her editorials and columns advocating an end to video poker in South Carolina. Through these awards, the profession recognizes that she is a knowledgeable, dedicated, and respected journalist; and
Whereas, Ms. Scoppe has worked for The State Newspaper since 1986, and covered South Carolina state government and the General Assembly as a legislative reporter from 1988 until 1997 when she joined The State's editorial board as its youngest editorial writer; and
Whereas, Cindi is the first editorial writer, since the award began in 1968, to win the Gonzales Award which is named after the co-founder of The State Newspaper. As her award states, "she is an editorial writer in the best tradition". Ms. Scoppe was nominated and won the award for her editorials and columns advocating an end to video poker in South Carolina; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Press Association has recognized Ms. Scoppe's stellar work in 1999 by naming her "Journalist of the Year"; and
Whereas, Cindi came to South Carolina from her native North Carolina fourteen years ago. She is a native of Burlington, North Carolina, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied journalism and political science; and
Whereas, she worked for The Fayetteville, North Carolina Observer and Raleigh's News and Observer before coming to The State Newspaper. Ms. Scoppe and her husband, Rick, a sports writer for the Greenville News, live in Columbia; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly praise Ms. Scoppe for her insightful reasoning, articulate writing, and her energy and fervor at seeking out and developing all news stories she covers. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly honor and commend Cindi Ross Scoppe, associate editor of The State Newspaper, on being awarded the "2000 Ambrose E. Gonzales Award" and on being chosen the "1999 South Carolina Journalist of the Year" by the South Carolina Press Association.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Cindi Ross Scoppe.
