TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF HUGH HAMILTON JEFFORDS, FORMER MAYOR OF BISHOPVILLE, WHO PASSED AWAY TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 2000, AND TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR HIM FOR HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HARD WORK EXPENDED TO BENEFIT THE PEOPLE OF BISHOPVILLE AND LEE COUNTY.

Whereas, Hugh Hamilton Jeffords was born January 14, 1923, in Florence, the son of the late Thomas Leroy Jeffords, Sr., and Marian Lee Muldrow Jeffords. He graduated from Tans Bay High School, attended Presbyterian College, and served with the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater; and

Whereas, for many years Mr. Jeffords was an insurance broker representing World Insurance Company and American Family Life; and

Whereas, Mr. Jeffords served as Mayor of Bishopville from 1975 to 1979 and as president of the Santee Lynches Council of Governments in 1980. During his term as Mayor, Mr. Jeffords secured the grant funds that led to the expansion of the city's police station and the building of a new city hall. The building now bears his name. The city also built a new sewage treatment facility, repaired three-quarters of its water meters, and collected forty-five thousand dollars in delinquent taxes during his tenure; and

Whereas, Mr. Jeffords is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Margery Woodham Jeffords, four sons, Michael of Dalzell, Patrick of Hartsville, Robert "Robin" of Bishopville, and David of Quimby. Daughters-in-law Lisa of Dalzell, Luan of Hartsville, Carol of Quimby, nine grandchildren and three nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Merideth Jane Jeffords, his brothers, Muldrow Jeffords, T. L. "Dicksie" Jeffords, and a sister, Roberta Ship Barbour; and

Whereas, he loved to play golf, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman. He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, the Masons and Shriners. He was a member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church and the Lee County Historical Society. The people of Bishopville and Lee County will sorely miss this distinguished citizen. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate express their sincere sympathy to the family and many friends of Hugh Hamilton Jeffords, former Mayor of Bishopville, who passed away on March 7, 2000, and recognize and honor the many accomplishments and hard work that he expended for the people of Bishopville and Lee County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Hugh Hamilton Jeffords of Bishopville.
