A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

HONORING THE WINTHROP UNIVERSITY EAGLES BASKETBALL TEAM ON ITS SECOND CONSECUTIVE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the Winthrop University Eagles Men's Basketball Team has achieved a level of distinction heretofore unmatched by any Winthrop University Basketball Team by winning back-to-back Big South Conference Tournament Championships in 1999 and 2000; and

Whereas, the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team, by this achievement, has secured its second consecutive berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's annual tournament of the nation's sixty-four finest teams, that tournament known affectionately as "March Madness" or alternatively, the "Big Dance"; and

Whereas, Winthrop University is the first school in the Big South Conference history to earn back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament; and

Whereas, throughout their season, the members of the Winthrop University Eagles, with the guidance and mentoring of the entire Eagles coaching staff, under the direction of South Carolina native Gregg Marshall, exhibited the qualities of tenacity, teamwork, and sportsmanship that are the goals of student-athletes everywhere; and

Whereas, by their individual and collective achievements, the Winthrop Eagles and their coaching staff have brought national attention and national acclaim to Winthrop University, the City of Rock Hill, York County, and the entire State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Winthrop University, its coaching staff, and the Winthrop Eagles Basketball Team as Big South Conference Champions, and express pride in their representation of the Palmetto State at the NCAA Tournament in Tucson, Arizona.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team and coaching staff, in care of Winthrop University President Anthony J. DiGiorgio.
