A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING MANNING HIGH SCHOOL'S LADY MONARCHS ON WINNING THE 2000 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN BASKETBALL.

Whereas, the Manning High School Lady Monarchs Girls Basketball Team of Clarendon County overcame a fourth quarter deficit against the Clover High School Lady Blue Eagles for a 49-45 victory to win the South Carolina Class AAA Girl's State Championship; and

Whereas, this dynamic victory took place at the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, March 11, 2000, and was the end of a 28-4 season for the Lady Monarchs and their second championship in five attempts; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs basketball roster for the 1999-2000 season included the following players: Hope White, Marilyn Hilton, Kim Knox, Conella Henry, Latoya Johnson, Jessica Dukes, Iesha Dupree, Tonya York, Frederica McClary, Portia Blanding, Priscilla Dorch, Ronda Gibson, Stacey Conyers, and Tamika Morris; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs are under the veteran leadership of Head Coach John Thames who has an astounding record of 648-195 for an incredible .769 winning percentage in thirty-four years of coaching; and

Whereas, Coach Thames was ably assisted by assistant coaches Pam Rogers and Kay Young, team manager Jennifer Hilton, video operator Israel Witherspoon, and scorer Heather Young; and

Whereas, Manning athletic director is Coach Barry Avant, Manning High principal is Mr. Hughie Peterson, Jr., district superintendent is Dr. Rose Hilliard-Wilder, deputy superintendent for administration is Mr. Michael Shorter, and senior director of instruction is Mr. Daniel McCathern; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs were cheered to victory by the Manning High School varsity cheerleaders who are Lakesia Cantey, captain; Antwaun Way; Tiffany Lee; Courtney Watson; Sharmaine Anderson; Janice Boan; Kayla Shorter; Aften Paul; Ashley McKay; Lindsay McGee; Betsy Tyler; and who are coached by Ingrid Stogner; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs varsity basketball team exhibited a team spirit and enthusiasm which was a cornerstone in allowing them to fulfill their destiny as a championship team, an achievement highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Manning High School Lady Monarchs on their well-earned 2000 Class AAA State Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Lady Monarchs basketball team of Manning High School and Head Coach John Franklin Thames.
