TO AMEND CHAPTER 39, TITLE 59, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS, BY ADDING SECTION 59-39-115 SO AS TO PROVIDE FOR THE ISSUANCE OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA TO A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ENLISTED IN THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES DURING THE PERIOD OF DECEMBER 8, 1941, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1, 1946, UPON PRESENTATION OF THE APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 39, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-39-115. (A) A South Carolinian who enlisted in any branch of the United States military while enrolled as a student in any high school of this State during the period December 8, 1941, through September 1, 1946, must be issued a high school diploma from the South Carolina high school of attendance at the time of enlistment upon presentation of documentation of enlistment and school enrollment to the South Carolina Department of Education.
(B) A non-native resident of South Carolina who enlisted in any branch of the United States military while enrolled as a student in any high school of the United States or its territories during the period December 8, 1941, through September 1, 1946, must be issued a high school diploma from the South Carolina high school of his or her choice upon presentation of documentation of enlistment and school enrollment to the South Carolina Department of Education.
(C) A posthumous high school diploma must be awarded to any person meeting the criteria of subsection (A) or (B) upon written request of the individual's family."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
