OFFERING THE SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE AIKEN BOXING CLUB/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER UPON BEING CHOSEN AS THE OFFICIAL HOST OF THE 2000 JUNIOR OLYMPIC CHAMPIONSHIPS ON FRIDAY, MAY 5, 2000, AND SATURDAY, MAY 6, 2000.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with great pleasure the remarkable accomplishment of the Aiken Boxing/Youth Development Center on being named the official host of the 2000 Junior Olympic Championships on Friday, May 5, 2000, and Saturday, May 6, 2000; and
Whereas, the Aiken Boxing/Youth Development Center was founded in 1994 by Wanda and Leroy Green with an agenda focusing on the development of the whole child -- academic, spiritual, emotional, and physical through programs, counseling, and competition; and
Whereas, the mission statement of the Aiken Boxing/Youth Development Center is to encourage adolescents to embrace and experience healthy lifestyles. The center utilizes teaching tools of positive family values, self-respect, self-esteem, and positive decision-making skills; and
Whereas, the goal is for their youths to achieve their highest goals not only in competitive sports but also within schools, communities, and peer environments; and
Whereas, the desired final goal is that the youth who are involved with the Aiken Boxing/Youth Development Center become healthy adults and self-supporting productive citizens. The high standards to which the youth must comply foster accountability and achievement; and
Whereas, under the Green's unwavering leadership, the Aiken Boxing/Youth Development Center has served over five hundred Aiken teens that strive to complete the programs of life skills and decision making, teen pregnancy prevention, drug free lifestyle; and fatherhood initiatives. Further, they are taught the skills of boxing and successfully compete in all levels of boxing throughout the country; and
Whereas, the Junior Olympic Championship event highlights the successful involvement with adolescents in Aiken County. The event also focuses on the collaboration with the Second Judicial Circuit Youth Council, the Aiken County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council, the Police Athletic League, the Aiken County Public Schools Peer Mediators, and the Aiken Center for Drug and Alcohol Services; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to acknowledge and recognize the commitment and inspiration Wanda and Leroy Green have extended to the youth of Aiken County and wish them, along with the Aiken Boxing Club/Youth Development Center, the very best in all their future endeavors. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, offer their sincere congratulations to the Aiken Boxing Club/Youth Development Center upon being chosen as the official host of the 2000 Junior Olympic Championships on Friday, May 5, 2000, and Saturday, May 6, 2000.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Wanda and Leroy Green on behalf of the Aiken Boxing Club/Youth Development Center.
