A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING MISS ALVA S. LEWIS OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY UPON HER RETIREMENT AS PRINCIPAL OF DOUGLAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND WISHING HER WELL IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Miss Alva S. Lewis has been a lifetime resident of Edgefield County, the daughter of Willie and Leona Lewis; and

Whereas, she graduated from South Carolina State College receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966 and a Master in Education degree in 1971, receiving an Education Specialist degree in 1974; and

Whereas, from 1966 through 1977, she taught elementary school in Graniteville and Warrenville, and in 1977, she added administrative duties upon being named principal; and

Whereas, in 1979, she became the Principal of Douglas Elementary School, where she has served with dedication and distinction for the past twenty-one years; and

Whereas, during her tenure as principal she has become the catalyst for promoting the understanding of "rural education" and an advisor to four superintendents on the issue; recently she was recognized for her efforts upon receiving the Rural Educator Award; and

Whereas, she has worked tirelessly and with diligence to bring to her school a sound Title I schoolwide program, she has expanded technology to ensure computers in every classroom, and she has cultivated and nurtured a strong and supportive Parent-Teacher Organization; and

Whereas, she has developed strong programs to improve test scores, has emphasized the importance of School-to-Work Programs, and has implemented a "Lunch Buddies" program where community leaders join class groups for lunch one day a month; and

Whereas, under her leadership Douglas Elementary has been recognized as a South Carolina Exemplary Writing Award School for five consecutive years and recognized as a School Incentive Award Winner for four years; and

Whereas, one of her most noted accomplishments came from her leadership while Douglas Elementary underwent the process to become a member of Accredited Southern Association Colleges and Schools; and

Whereas, Miss Lewis not only demonstrates her leadership skills and talents in the education arena, also having membership in numerous educational associations, and she is also a very active, contributing member of her community; and

Whereas, her community affiliations include service on the Department of Social Services Advisory Board Chairperson, Board Member of the Edgefield Downtown Development Board during the revitalization program, chairperson of the Old Ninety Six Tourism Commission for the State of South Carolina, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Wachovia Bank; and

Whereas, she is a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she shares her love of music as a member of the Pleasant Grove Gospel Chorus and where she also teaches Sunday School; and

Whereas, Miss Lewis has been a strong administrator, greatly admired and respected by her faculty, peers and fellow educators, and her leadership will be greatly missed; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to have this opportunity to honor this outstanding educator and administrator who has brought great pride and recognition to Douglas Elementary School, the Edgefield County School District, and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Miss Alva Lewis of Edgefield upon her retirement as Principal of Douglas Elementary School and wish her well in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Miss Alva S. Lewis.
