A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MISS CORTNI BRACKEN OF PICKENS COUNTY FOR HER TIRELESS INVOLVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S ISSUES, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE, AND FOR BEING NAMED MISS MID-STATE 2000.

Whereas, Miss Cortni Bracken is the creator of "Palmetto Champs", a child abuse awareness and prevention program that teaches children how to recognize abuse and how to respond if they are victims of abuse; and

Whereas, she has designed a "Hugs Campaign" to educate new mothers on proper parenting skills; and

Whereas, Miss Bracken has distributed newsletters to schools, civic organizations, and civic leaders; she has written editorials and produced numerous public service announcements to educate South Carolinians about the issue of child abuse; and

Whereas, she has served as a volunteer with Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County since 1997, and in June of 1999 was elected as the youngest member to serve on the Board of Directors of this organization; and

Whereas, Miss Bracken is a Committee Member for Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina; and

Whereas, she was nominated as a 1996 Olympic torchbearer, is a recipient of the Presidential Student Award, and is a recipient of the Most Outstanding Community Service Award presented during the University of South Carolina's Homecoming Showcase; and

Whereas, Miss Bracken is a two-time recipient of the South Carolina Cares for Children Scholarship presented by Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina during the 1998 and 1999 Miss South Carolina Pageant, and a recipient of the 1999 Nancy Moore Thurmond Community Service Scholarship given by the Miss America Organization and presented to her during the 1999 Miss South Carolina Pageant; and

Whereas, she is a student at the University of South Carolina who was recently named Miss Mid-State 2000; and

Whereas, Miss Bracken is a caring and generous human being with deeply-rooted family values and impeccably high standards. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Miss Cortni Bracken of Pickens County for her tireless involvement in children's issues, particularly in the area of preventing child abuse, and for being named Miss Mid-State 2000.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Miss Cortni Bracken.
