TO HONOR AND COMMEND JOHN H. HOSTETLER, PRINCIPAL OF WALHALLA HIGH SCHOOL, UPON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY YEARS OF TEACHING, COACHING, AND ADMINISTRATION AT THE SCHOOL, TO SALUTE HIS EFFORTS AND DEDICATION IN MAKING WALHALLA HIGH SCHOOL THE SUPERIOR PUBLIC SCHOOL INSTITUTION IT HAS BECOME, AND TO WISH HIM GODSPEED IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, in the 1960's John H. Hostetler, a native of Charleroi, Pennsylvania, chose Clemson University as his college and has, since then, made the upstate and Oconee County his home. He is married to Linda Haile and they have two sons, John and Greg; and

Whereas, Mr. Hostetler played football for Clemson University; he received a bachelor of science degree in science in 1968 from Clemson University after student teaching for one semester at Walhalla High School; after serving the United States in Vietnam, he returned to Walhalla High School in 1970 to begin his teaching career as a physical and earth science teacher and his coaching career; and

Whereas, Mr. Hostetler began coaching as an assistant football coach and girls basketball and track coach; from 1973-76 he served as the head football coach. His players knew him as a serious, even driven coach who kept them in top physical condition. Part of his teams' practices involved running the famous and arduous "Hostetler Hill" at 6:00 A. M. on Saturday mornings; and

Whereas, he continued his education at Clemson, studying educational administration and receiving a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision in 1975, and an Education Specialist in Administration degree in 1980; and

Whereas, in 1976, Mr. Hostetler was hired as the vice principal of Walhalla High School, and in 1979 the school district promoted him to principal which is the position he has held for twenty-one years; and

Whereas, as principal, Mr. Hostetler continually looked for ways to improve the quality of education offered at Walhalla; he has led an extremely successful effort to bring excellence and success to the school. It has received many awards and been recognized as one of the best high schools in South Carolina under his leadership. For example, Walhalla High School was named one of the top ten "New American High Schools" in the nation in 1996 by the United States Department of Education and the National Center for Research in Vocational Education; and

Whereas, the theme of Walhalla High School is "Success by Design", a motto which has proven so true for the school under Mr. Hostetler's leadership. The school has dedicated its efforts and designed its programs to help its students be successful; and

Whereas, Mr. Hostetler has served on numerous local, state, and national committees of instructional supervision, teacher evaluations, school-to-work transition and pre-vocational education. He is a member of many national, state, and local professional organizations. He has also presented lectures at state and national conferences on such topics as tech prep and occupational education, school reform, contextual learning, and instructional assessment. He is an active member of the Walhalla Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Walhalla High School has truly benefited in many ways because of John Hostetler's thirty years of dedicated service to the school and its students. Many of the students whom he taught have become very successful in their chosen fields, including persons now in public service and one who is now a state senator. Mr. Hostetler is respected and admired for his dedication to the education profession. He has mentored many more young professionals in the teaching profession than would be expected. He has positively changed the lives of more students than could be imagined. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate honor and commend John H. Hostetler, principal of Walhalla High School, upon his retirement after thirty years of teaching, coaching, and administration at the school, salute his efforts and dedication in making Walhalla High School the superior public school institution it has become, and wish him Godspeed in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to John H. Hostsetler.
