A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE ROCK HILL HIGH SCHOOL "BEARCAT" WRESTLING TEAM, ITS LEGENDARY HEAD COACH, JIM BARNES, HIS ASSISTANT COACHES, AND STAFF ON WINNING THE 2000 CLASS AAAA STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP, AND FOR ESTABLISHING A WINNING TRADITION THAT SPANS OVER THE PAST TWENTY-FIVE SEASONS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly note with pride the extraordinary achievement of the Rock Hill High School "Bearcat" Wrestling Team for winning the 2000 Class AAAA State Wrestling Championship by defeating Irmo High School; and

Whereas, this feat could not have been accomplished without the outstanding leadership of legendary Head Coach, Jim Barnes, and his two assistant coaches, Phil Magdic and Chris Brock, and his staff; and

Whereas, the following members of the "Bearcat" State Championship Team captured state titles in their respective weight classes: T. T. Thompson, Melvin Nelson, Marcus Cherry, Jarrett Soles, and Ryan Adams; and

Whereas, the team's varsity starters are Paul Stanly, T. T. Thompson, Melvin Nelson, Marcus Cherry, John David Teague, Jarrett Soles, Marquis Turner, Terrane J. Thompson, Mario Gordon, Shane Archie, Chris Hinson, Tarvaris Martin, Ryan Adams, and Ben Jaggers; and

Whereas, the "Bearcat" Wrestling Team, under Head Coach Barnes's direction, has finished first or placed second in state championship competition for each of the past twenty-five seasons; and

Whereas, this remarkable history of success would not have been possible without the genius of Head Coach Barnes, who will retire at the end of this school year after thirty years of success as a coach with more than four hundred wins, and having accumulated many honors for his coaching talents, which include being selected as: 1999 Charlotte Observer Coach of the Year; 1996 National Coaches Association State Coach of the Year; 1994 and 1995 South Carolina Sports Report Coach of the Year; 1977, 1980, 1983, and 1987 National District #3 Coach of the Year; and 1975, 1976, and 1984 South Carolina Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, special recognition should go to the "Bearcat" cheerleaders, student body, administration, faculty, staff, parents, and many loyal fans whose support has been invaluable throughout the season; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize the extraordinary achievements of the Rock Hill High School "Bearcat" Wrestling Team, its legendary Head Coach, Jim Barnes, his assistant coaches, and staff. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Rock Hill High School "Bearcat" Wrestling Team, its legendary Head Coach, Jim Barnes, his assistant coaches, and staff on winning the 2000 Class AAAA State Wrestling Championship and for establishing a winning tradition that spans over the past twenty-five years.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach, Jim Barnes.
