A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING PICKENS MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR ITS OUTSTANDING SCHOOL YEAR AND CONGRATULATING THE SCHOOL FOR EARNING THE PRESTIGIOUS BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD, THE HIGHEST AWARD BESTOWED BY THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

Whereas, Pickens Middle School's front entrance is adorned with blue ribbons signaling the school's latest achievement, just two weeks after being named a National Service Learning Leader School; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School has received state and national honor as one of four secondary schools in South Carolina to earn the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School is the first school in Pickens County to earn the award, the highest given by the United States Department of Education, recognizing schools that are unusually effective in educating their children; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School was chosen for this honor after an arduous selection procedure including a lengthy application process and an on-site evaluation; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School attributes much of its success to its focus on the arts and technology as well as the dedication of its students to excel both in and out of the classroom; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School lives it's theme "Connecting to the World," by boasting more Internet capable computers per student than any other school in the district; and

Whereas, Pickens Middle School also received top honors in the recent regional science fair and is home to this year's district spelling bee champion; and

Whereas, Pickens Mayor Ted Shehan has proclaimed Friday, May 26, 2000, as Pickens Middle School Day, which will be a culmination of what has been an unbelievable year; and

Whereas, Principal Dean Holder has served three decades at Pickens Middle School and cannot remember a year when the faculty and staff have worked harder to achieve this unprecedented recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of South Carolina congratulate the students, parents, community volunteers, staff, faculty, and administration of Pickens Middle School on their stellar achievement and recognize them as winners of the national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award.
