A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. EVELYN M. BERRY OF LEXINGTON COUNTY FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BETTERMENT OF THE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM IN SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, Dr. Evelyn Berry has served as Executive Director of the South Carolina School Boards Association for the past eight years; and

Whereas, during her tenure at SCSBA, Dr. Berry has distinguished herself in South Carolina as a true champion of public education by providing leadership to school boards all over the State to assist them to function effectively through training programs and through provision of resources for school boards and school board members to raise student achievement, and to establish board standards and ethics; and

Whereas, Dr. Berry founded and continues to facilitate and convene the Friends of Education, a statewide group of fourteen organizations that share a common purpose of improving public education in South Carolina; and

Whereas, she has also rendered great service on a national basis as a Commissioner with the Education Commission of the States; and

Whereas, her outstanding career in public education began when she became a teacher and continued as she worked her way through the ranks of administration in Columbia area school districts eventually successfully serving as Superintendent of Lexington School District One; and

Whereas, Dr. Berry has unselfishly contributed to her community through volunteer service in various positions including President of the Columbia Rotary Club, President of the University Associates at the University of South Carolina, Division Chairman of the United Way of the Midlands Campaign, member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Richland Memorial Hospital, member of the Board of Directors of Children's Hospital at Richland Memorial Hospital, and a member of the Education Committee of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, through service to her alma mater, Winthrop University, Dr. Berry has provided leadership in the area of higher education in South Carolina as President of the Winthrop Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Trustees, and member of the Foundation Board; and

Whereas, Dr. Berry's outstanding contributions to her profession, her community, and her alma mater have been recognized through the receipt of many awards including the Order of the Palmetto, Top One Hundred Educators in South Carolina, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of South Carolina College of Education, Outstanding School Administrator Award, Palmetto State Teachers Association Leadership Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, and Mary Mildred Sullivan Award from Winthrop University; and

Whereas, she is recognized as one of the preeminent Executive Directors of state school board associations by the National School Boards Association and served as its representative at the Learning First Alliance in Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, she is widely respected throughout the State for her tireless dedicated efforts in working with staff, board members, superintendents, business, and state government officials for the sole purpose of making our public education system most effective in serving our children; and

Whereas, Dr. Evelyn Berry has passionately devoted her life to the service of children so that their lives can be full and so that they may be contributing citizens to their state and country; and

Whereas, the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly acknowledge and recognize her lifelong commitment and selfless service to the children and citizens of South Carolina on the occasion of her retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby recognize Dr. Evelyn M. Berry for her dedication to the children and citizens of South Carolina through her professional and personal life, express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Berry for such service on the occasion of her retirement as Executive Director of the South Carolina School Boards Association, and extend their best wishes for her continued success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Harvey Gene Turner, President of the South Carolina School Boards Association, so that it may be formally presented to Dr. Berry at a place and time that the SCSBA Board of Directors deems appropriate.
