COMMENDING SERGEANT MAJOR ROBERT E. HALL FOR HIS YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND FOR ATTAINING THE RANK OF SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE ARMY, AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE ARMED FORCES AFTER THIRTY-TWO YEARS OF SERVICE.
Whereas, Sergeant Major Robert E. Hall was sworn in as the 11th Sergeant Major of the Army on October 21, 1997; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall as Sergeant Major of the Army serves as the personal advisor to the Army Chief of Staff on all enlisted-related matters and holds the highest position attainable by a non-commissioned officer; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall devotes much of his time as Sergeant Major of the Army to traveling throughout Army installations, observing training, talking to soldiers and their families, and serving on a variety of councils and boards that make decisions which affect enlisted soldiers and their families; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall has held other high-level positions in the Army, including the senior enlisted position as Command Sergeant Major of the United States Central Command at McDill Air Force Base in Florida, and assignments as a Command Sergeant Major at Fort Stewart, Georgia, in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, in Korea, and at Fort Meade, Maryland; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall has held numerous key leadership positions during his distinguished career in the Army, including positions as a squad leader, a platoon sergeant, a battalion operations sergeant, a battalion intelligence sergeant, a first sergeant, and a drill sergeant; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall has been honored for his service by selection as Army Drill Sergeant of the Year for 1979 and induction into the prestigious Sergeant Morales Club and the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall has been further honored for his personal commitment to the Army with numerous awards and decorations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall is dedicated to his wife, Carolyn, and his three children, Apra, Rea, and Jason; and
Whereas, Sergeant Major Hall has through this meritorious service been a proud representative of his home state of South Carolina and his hometown of Gaffney, to which he will return upon his retirement from the Army in June. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Sergeant Major Robert E. Hall for his thirty-two years of dedicated and distinguished service to the United States Army, congratulate him on his attainment of the position of Sergeant Major of the Army, and extend best wishes to him in his retirement.
