TO CONGRATULATE DR. JOHN KENNETH WADDELL AND TO JOIN ALLEN UNIVERSITY IN RECOGNIZING AND HONORING ITS PRESIDENT FOR HIS LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Whereas, Dr. John Kenneth Waddell is a native of Columbia, South Carolina and is the son of Dr. Maurice Waddell, Sr. and Mrs. Doris P. Waddell (Class of 1956); and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell is a graduate of Beaufort High School where he served as President of Student Government and captain of the football and basketball teams and attended "Presidential Classroom for Young Americans" in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell received both Master's (Student Personnel) and Bachelor's (Secondary Education) degrees from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell is a graduate of Harvard University Institute for Educational Management (IEM, Cambridge, MA) and received a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell has also completed an internship at the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and in the Office of Senator Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC), Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell has served in a variety of positions in higher education, including Residence Life, USC-Columbia and Florida State; Research Associate, Florida Post Secondary Education Planning Commission (PEPC); Assistant to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement/Capital Campaign, Tougaloo College, (MS); Dean of Students, Allen University; Dean for Academic Affairs, Allen University; and Interim President and President, Allen University; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell is lauded for his outstanding leadership in guiding Allen University to the following milestones: re-evaluation and implementation of campus Strategic and Master Plans; re-invigoration of internal culture pursuant to campus history and pride; removal of institution from Warning Status with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; ten-year Reaffirmation of Accreditation; increase in enrollment by 46% from 1997 to present (287 to 420); reduction of default rate to below 25%; establishment of new offices of Institutional Advancement and Contracts and Grants; and a gain of state certification in Elementary Teacher Education; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell was and remains the youngest HBCU president when appointed two and a half years ago at age 35; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell is a member of Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), Phi Delta Kappa, and has served on the boards of "Keep America Beautiful for the Midlands", The United Way, and the University of South Carolina Alumni Council; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell is married to the former Sharon Bolton of Columbia, and is the devoted father of two children, Alexandria Nicole and Lauren Kristina; and
Whereas, Dr. Waddell has given of himself unselfishly to numerous community service activities while maintaining the highest work ethic as evident in the continued growth of Allen University. Now therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, join Allen University in acknowledging the years of devoted community service rendered by Dr. John Kenneth Waddell.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Waddell.
