TO AMEND SECTION 44-1-240, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE PILOT DENTAL PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN, SO AS TO CONVERT THIS FROM A PILOT PROGRAM WITH IMPLEMENTATION SUBJECT TO FUNDS BEING APPROPRIATED TO A MANDATORY DENTAL HEALTH SCREENING PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH NO FUNDING CONTINGENCY.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 44-1-240 of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 508 of 1990, is amended to read:
"Section 44-1-240. Subject to the funds appropriated, The department shall implement a model pilot program for dental health screenings of children enrolled in public schools in kindergarten, second, and seventh grades.The department may designate up to five counties representative of the rural and urban areas of the State to participate in this pilot program.
The pilot program must concentrate on providing provide dental education, preventive dental care, screening, and treatment referral for children with an emphasis on children who are eligible for the federal free and reduced price school lunch program.
The program must include at least one dental coordinator in each state health district and must seek cooperation from local school districts, other governmental entities, and dentists to coordinate federal Medicaid assistance and any volunteer efforts to reduce costs to the State to the extent practicable.
The results or effectiveness of this pilot program must be reported to the Senate Committee on Medical Affairs and the House Committee on Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs at intervals designated by the chairman of the committee."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
