TO AMEND TITLE 8, CHAPTER 11, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO STATE OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES, BY ADDING SECTION 8-11-150 SO AS TO GRANT UP TO THREE DAYS OF PAID LEAVE FOR STATE FULL-TIME PERMANENT OR PROBATIONARY EMPLOYEES ON THE DEATH OF A MEMBER OF THE EMPLOYEE'S IMMEDIATE FAMILY, AND TO PROVIDE THE DEFINITION OF IMMEDIATE FAMILY TO INCLUDE THE SPOUSE, GREAT-GRANDPARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS, AUNTS, UNCLES, BROTHERS, SISTERS, CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, AND GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN OF THE EMPLOYEE OR THE SPOUSE, AND TO FURTHER PROVIDE THAT THE EMPLOYEE SHALL SUBMIT A STATEMENT TO THE EMPLOYER STATING THE NAME OF THE DECEASED, THE EMPLOYEE'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE DECEASED, AND THE NUMBER OF LEAVE DAYS REQUESTED.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 11 of Title 8 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 8-11-150. (A) A full-time permanent or probationary state employee, upon request, is granted up to three consecutive workdays of leave with pay on the death of a member of the employee's immediate family. The employee requesting leave shall submit a statement to the employer stating the name of the deceased, the employee's relationship to the deceased, and the number of days of leave requested.
(B) For purposes of this section, the term 'immediate family' is defined as the spouse, great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of either the employee or the spouse.
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
