A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE LUGOFF-ELGIN "DEMONS" HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM, ITS COACHES, AND STAFF ON WINNING THE 1999 STATE CLASS AAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP, ITS THIRD CONSECUTIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the 1999 Lugoff-Elgin "Demons" High School Wrestling Team won the 1999 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship under the leadership and guidance of Head Coach Tim Wash, assistant coaches Joe Carron and Andrew Heddy, trainers Jill Drees and Amanda Heddy, along with team physician Dr. Hank Hulteen's assistance and service; and

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin Demons accomplished this outstanding achievement for the third year in a row, having captured the State Class AAA Wrestling title for 1997 and 1998; and

Whereas, winning three consecutive State Championships is a remarkable accomplishment seldom accomplished in any varsity high school sport; and

Whereas, the 1999 Lugoff-Elgin Wrestling Team compiled a 15-4 won-loss record, often competing against even larger schools in the AAAA division; and

Whereas, the Demons defeated Eastside High School 39-25 for the 1999 State AAA Wrestling Championship crown, with 11 of its wrestlers having qualified for the individual state tournament, these being James Parker, Ryan McClester, Neil Flowers, Jeff Courson, Jon Baker, Peter Hemingway, Donald Creel, Derek Hall, Matt Baker, Boykin Gaskins, and Ben Connell; and

Whereas, three team members won the individual State Championship at his weight, those being Ben Connell, Jeff Courson, and Ryan McClester; and

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin 1999 Wrestling Team members are Doug Gainey, James Parker, Ryan McClester, Neil Flowers, Jeff Courson, Jason Parker, Peter Hemingway, Derek Hall, Matt Baker, Boykin Gaskins, Ben Connell, Lance Schultz, Drew Marr, Jon Gaines, Jon Baker, Colby Bowers, Matt Gaskins, Donald Creel, Ray Murphy, Matt Peake, Newman Segars, Chris Marr, Allen Jefferson, Jon Diller, and Todd Heddy; and

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin High School Demons are led by the school principal, Creig Tyler, and the outstanding coaching and training staff for this championship team which consists of Head Coach Tim Wash, assistant coaches Andrew Heddy and Joe Carron, Trainers Jill Dress and Amanda Heddy, and team physician Dr. Hank Hulteen; and

Whereas, additional honors earned by the Lugoff-Elgin team include:

(1) Ben Connell, Team Co-Captain, with a 40-1 season record, won the Lower State Title and his third consecutive individual State Championship Title at the 215 pound level;

(2) Ryan McClester, with a 34-4 season record, State Champion and Lower State Champ at 112 pounds;

(3) Jeff Courson with a 31-7 record in matches, Lower State Champion and State Champion at the 125 pound category;

(4) James Parker with a 35-6 record, Lower State Champion, SC All-Star, State runner-up at the 103 pound level and Team Co-Captain;

(5) Matt Baker, Team Co-Captain, with a 32-7 individual record, Lower State Champion at 171 pounds, State runner-up;

(6) Peter Hemingway with a 33-8 season match record, Lower State Champion, second in the State, All-Star, and Team Co-Captain; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations so that they might publicly recognize and congratulate the Lugoff-Elgin High School "Demons" Wrestling Team, its coaches, trainers, and team doctor, the school principal, Mr. Creig Tyler, and the Kershaw County School District which this team has so proudly and honorably represented, for the tremendous and continuing success of this team in accomplishing a third consecutive State Championship AAA Wrestling title, to further congratulate the team members for their collective and individual awards and outstanding achievements this season and extend best wishes for much continued success in all their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the Lugoff-Elgin High School, its 1999 Demon Wrestling Team along with its coaches, trainers, and staff for winning the 1998 State Class AAA Wrestling Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Lugoff-Elgin High School Wrestling Team.
