TO EXTEND THE HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE AIR FORCE JUNIOR ROTC UNIT OF JAMES F. BYRNES HIGH SCHOOL IN DUNCAN ON RECEIVING NUMEROUS HONORS AND AWARDS WHICH REPRESENT THE HIGHEST RECOGNITION OF THEIR EXCELLENCE AS A UNIT GIVEN BY THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE.
Whereas, James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan has cause to be extremely proud of its Air Force Junior ROTC unit; and
Whereas, the unit was first established on July 1, 1993, as a group of 115 cadets and in the ensuing five years has grown to an enrollment in this school year of 292 cadets of which half are young men and half are young women cadets; and
Whereas, the current cadet corps includes very motivated and talented young people; for example, in the unit are the current class valedictorian, the student body vice president, four student council members, twelve Rotary scholars, two cadets tied for the ranking of number one in their class, three varsity cheerleaders, twenty-three varsity athletes, and sixty-five band and orchestra members; and
Whereas, the staff who have been so instrumental in the success of this Junior ROTC unit are Colonel Pittman, Senior Instructor, and Chief Master Sergeant Alford and Major Williams, Assistant Instructors; and
Whereas, this unit has received national recognition each of several years since their inception; in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 they were named "Honor Unit", which is the highest recognition given by the United States Air Force; and
Whereas, they received the Air Force Association "Sword of Excellence" as the top unit in the State in 1997 and 1998; the unit is the only one ever to receive this award for two consecutive years; and
Whereas, each and every member of the unit is to be commended for their dedication and hard work; in 1996 a cadet received an appointment to the Air Force Academy and this year, 1999, a cadet, Trevor Pittman, who is the class valedictorian and who received the Commander's Award at the National Drill Team Championship in 1997, has been honored with an appointment to the Air Force Academy; and
Whereas, the drill team of this Air Force Junior ROTC unit competed nationally at the National Drill Team Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1997 and received the Third in Nation Color Guard Award and the Fourth in Nation Regulation Drill Award. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives extend their hearty congratulations to the Air Force Junior ROTC unit of James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan on receiving numerous honors and awards which represent the highest recognition of their excellence as a unit given by the United States Air Force.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the James F. Byrnes High School Air Force Junior ROTC Senior Instructor, Colonel Pittman.
