CONGRATULATING SONOCO PRODUCTS COMPANY OF HARTSVILLE, IN DARLINGTON COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE COMPANY AND EXPRESSING TO ITS FOUNDING FAMILY, MANAGERS, AND EMPLOYEES THE APPRECIATION OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS TO THIS GLOBAL PACKAGING COMPANY FOUNDED AND BASED IN HARTSVILLE FOR THE IMMEASURABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ECONOMY OF THIS STATE AND ON BEHALF OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS WISHING CONTINUED SUCCESS FOR THIS PIONEER COMPANY THAT HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR THIS STATE AND ITS PEOPLE.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that in May, 1899, Major James Lide Coker, a grievously wounded veteran of the War Between the States, founded the Southern Novelty Company and became its first president; and
Whereas, through hard work and unbounded determination through generations under the direct management of succeeding generations of the Coker family and now under the leadership of President and Chief Executive Officer, Peter C. Browning and board chairman, Charles W. Coker, the Southern Novelty Company, now Sonoco Products Company, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of packaging material for industrial and consumer markets and of recycled paperboard, and
Whereas, Sonoco is a Fortune 500 Company, with three billion dollars in annual sales that employs more than seventeen thousand people at more than two hundred seventy locations on five continents; and
Whereas, the growth and prosperity of this company is the result of the vision and management, its founding family, their loyal associates and successes, and employees who, in building the company, played an immeasurable part in the growth and development of Hartsville and Darlington counties, and all of South Carolina, and
Whereas, today Sonoco employs more than two thousand four hundred South Carolinians at facilities scattered throughout the State and has been an outstanding corporate citizen to all its neighbors in this State, in the United States, and worldwide; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they may note the milestone in the history of a great South Carolina based enterprise. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulates Sonoco Products Company of Hartsville, in Darlington County, on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the company and expresses to its founding family, managers, and employees the appreciation of all South Carolinians to this global packaging company founded and based in Hartsville for its immeasurable contributions to the development of the economy of this State and on behalf of all South Carolinians, wishing continued success for this pioneer company that has done so much for this State and its people.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Peter C. Browning, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sonoco Products Company, and Mr. Charles W. Coker, Chairman, Board of Directors, Sonoco Products Company.
