TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF MR. LEONARD WALTER "COACH" PINKNEY, SR., UPON HIS DEATH.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Leonard Walter "Coach" Pinkney, Sr., of Lee County; and

Whereas, Coach Pinkney was the son of the late Andrew Pinkney and Mary Anne Davis Pinkney, the widower of Albertha N. Pinkney, and together with his wife reared two children; and

Whereas, he attended the public schools of Lee County, and graduated from Burke High School in Charleston; and

Whereas, Coach Pinkney served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 through 1954; and

Whereas, he received his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Morris College in 1957, where he lettered in football, baseball, and track, and was a class president, treasurer of the Student Government Association, editor-in-chief of the college newspaper, member of the Yearbook Staff, Science Club, and Future Teachers of America Club; and

Whereas, Coach Pinkney completed additional studies at Tuskegee Institute, the State University of Iowa, and South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, he had a very successful coaching career on both the high school and collegiate levels which included capturing several district championships in football and men's basketball while serving as athletic director of Kelly Edwards High School and later at A. C. Corbett High School; and

Whereas, while serving as head football coach at Voorhees High School from 1966 through 1969, he led his 1968 and 1969 football squads to the State Finals and was recognized in 1969 by being named Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, in 1975, he was honored by being selected as the first Black coach to serve as an All State All Star Football Coach; and

Whereas, on April 17, 1999, Coach Pinkney was inducted into the Morris College Athletic Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, before retiring as a teacher and coach in 1983, Coach Pinkney taught and coached in Allendale, Clarendon, Colleton, Laurens, and Orangeburg Counties; and

Whereas, he was an active member of the Morris College National Alumni Association, NAACP, Morris College Athletic Hall of Fame Association, South Carolina Education Association, National Education Association, Optimist Club, South Carolina Coaches Association, and Executive Director of the Bamberg County Democratic Association; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to extend their sincere condolences to his son, daughter, and other members of his family upon the death of this outstanding community leader. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Leonard Walter "Coach" Pinkney of Lee County, upon his death.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mr. Leonard Walter "Coach" Pinkney.
