A BILL

TO ENACT THE "PUBLICATION OF CRIMINAL TRIAL RESULTS ACT OF 2000" BY INCLUDING A PROVISION TO AMEND ARTICLE 3, CHAPTER 7, TITLE 1, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO SOLICITORS, BY ADDING SECTION 1-7-335 SO AS TO REQUIRE THE SOLICITOR OF EACH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT TO RELEASE ANNUALLY A REPORT WHICH LISTS, FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR, THE NUMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES BROUGHT TO TRIAL, THE NUMBER OF GUILTY VERDICTS, THE NUMBER OF NOT GUILTY VERDICTS, AND THE NUMBER OF MISTRIALS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. This act may be cited as the "Publication of Criminal Trial Results Act of 2000".

SECTION 2. Article 3, Chapter 7, Title 1 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 1-7-335. Every year, by January thirty-first, the solicitor of each judicial circuit shall compile and release publicly a report which lists for the previous year:

(1) the number of criminal cases brought to trial;

(2) the number of guilty verdicts;

(3) the number of not guilty verdicts; and

(4) the number of mistrials."

SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
