A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 59-5-65, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE POWERS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE BOARD SHALL ESTABLISH BY SCHOOL YEAR 1999-2000 A UNIFORM GRADING SYSTEM BASED ON A SPECIFIED NUMERICAL SCALE TO BE USED BY ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THIS STATE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 59-5-65 of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 164 of 1993, is further amended by adding a new item at the end to read:

"(17) Establish by school year 1999-2000 a uniform grading system to be used by all public schools in this State based on the following scale:

A = 90 -100

B = 80 - 89

C = 70 - 79

D = 60 - 69

F = 0 - 59

The board is authorized to permit variations in grading between elementary and secondary schools and in other instances where variation is necessary due to curriculum differences."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
