A HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE LADY MONARCHS OF MANNING HIGH SCHOOL ON WINNING THE 1999-2000 CLASS AAA GIRLS STATE BASKETBALL CROWN.

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs of Manning High School defeated the Lady Blue Eagles of Clover High School 49-45 to win the Class AAA girls state basketball title; and

Whereas, Manning High's victory took place at the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, March 11, 2000 and was the Lady Monarchs' first state basketball title since 1974; and

Whereas, the Manning team was coached by John Thames, who provided excellent guidance and direction throughout the 1999-2000 campaign and who won his second state title in five trips to the championship game during thirty-three years as Manning's coach; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs basketball roster for the 1999-2000 season included the following players: Hope White, Marilyn Hilton, Kim Knox, Concella Henry, Latoya Johnson, Jessica Dukes, Iesha Dupree, Tonya York, Frederica McClary, Portia Blanding, Priscilla Dorch, Ronda Gibson, Stacey Conyers, and Tamika Morris; and

Whereas, the assistant coaches to Head Coach Thames were Pam Rogers and Kay Young, team manger was Jennifer Hilton, video operator was Israel Witherspoon, and scorer was Heather Young; and

Whereas, Manning athletic director is Coach Barry Avant, school principal is Mr. Hughie Peterson, Jr., district superintendent is Dr. Rose Hilliard-Wilder, deputy superintendent for administration is Mr. Michael Shorter, and senior director of instruction is Mr. Daniel McCathern; and

Whereas, the Clarendon County School District II board of trustees includes the following: Matthew Prince, chairman; June Briggs, vice chairman; Jesse U. Thompson, secretary; A. C. English; Kevin L. Johnson; Robert M. Fleming; Glenn R. Quattlebaum; W. L. Hamilton; and Marilyn Wilson; and

Whereas, the Manning High varsity cheerleaders include the following: Lakeisa Cantey, captain; Antwaun Way; Tiffany Lee; Courtney Watson; Sharmaine Anderson; Janice Boan; Kayla Shorter; Aften Paul; Ashley McKay; Lindsay McGee; and Betsy Tyler; and the varsity cheerleader coach is Ingrid Stogner; and

Whereas, the Lady Monarchs exhibited great talent, determination, hard work, and unity during the season; these qualities helped assure them of the state title; and

Whereas, we are very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such a fine group of young ladies on this special occasion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Lady Monarchs of Manning High School on winning the 1999-2000 Class AAA girls state basketball crown.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Manning High School girls basketball team and Coach John Thames.
