A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING MR. JIMMY HOWARD NEWSOM OF DARLINGTON COUNTY FOLLOWING HIS RETIREMENT AS SUPERINTENDENT OF THE DARLINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mr. Jimmy Howard Newsom of Darlington County has retired as Superintendent of the Darlington County School District after a long and distinguished career; and

Whereas, he received a Bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University in 1960 and a Master's degree in 1970 and an Ed. S. degree in education administration in 1975 from East Tennessee State University; and

Whereas, Mr. Newsom's career in the Darlington County School District began in 1960 as a teacher, head football coach, and assistant basketball coach at Lamar High School; and

Whereas, he was subsequently principal at Lamar Elementary School followed by serving as Lamar Area Superintendent and then the Superintendent for Lamar/Hartsville Area Schools; and

Whereas, subsequently Mr. Newsom served as assistant, deputy, and interim superintendent of the county school district until being named superintendent in 1991; and

Whereas, he continued coaching basketball during his first five years as principal at Lamar Elementary School, and eventually achieving more than two hundred wins; and

Whereas, his coaching skills were recognized when he was selected to coach the South Carolina All-Star Basketball game and he is still affectionately known as "Coach"; and

Whereas, Mr. Newsom demonstrated his strengths as a leader, mediator, and mentor as he worked to blend faculty, staff, and students throughout the era of desegregation; and

Whereas, throughout his professional and civic life he has demonstrated his dedication to service and his commitment to excellence; and his accomplishments and honors have been numerous, including membership in Phi Delta Kappa, being selected as the South Carolina Civitan President of the Year, and being presented at the 1989 National School Boards Association's Annual Conference; and

Whereas, most recently Mr. Newsom's allegiance and loyalty to the teachers of Darlington County was honored by the Darlington County Teacher Forum by creating the Jimmy Howard Newsom Signature Award recognizing his strong connection and special relationship with teachers in the district - a criteria for all future recipients; and

Whereas, he served as a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the American Association of School Administrators, the Horace Mann League, and the Associated Club of Darlington County, and the Lamar Civitan Club; and

Whereas, his many contributions and tireless efforts to community life, including the Lamar Egg Scramble Jamboree, resulted in this festival receiving the Governor's Award for Outstanding State Festival; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to have the opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of Mr. Jimmy Newsom to not only the Darlington County School System but also to the community of Lamar and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognizes Mr. Jimmy Howard Newsom of Darlington County following his retirement as Superintendent of the Darlington County School District and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Jimmy Howard Newsom.
