A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND COMMEND THE GRADUATES OF THE ALLEN UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 1950 WHO NOW CELEBRATE THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR GRADUATION AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON THE MANY SUCCESSES AND ACHIEVEMENTS WHICH HAVE COME TO THEM IN THEIR LIVES AS A RESULT OF THE EXCELLENT EDUCATION RECEIVED AT ALLEN UNIVERSITY.

Whereas, Allen University was founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church at a time when the need to educate persons of African descent was compelling; and

Whereas, the school was first known as Payne Institute located in Cokesbury, South Carolina. This educational institution later moved to Columbia and was named Allen University after the distinguished and well respected founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Richard Allen; and

Whereas, Allen University's legacy is the accomplishments of its graduates. Alumni have distinguished themselves in almost every field of endeavor; and

Whereas, when World War II ended in 1945, many persons were afforded the opportunity to enroll in colleges and universities across the country. Allen University opened its doors to many of these returning soldiers who bravely served their country in many capacities during the difficult times of war; and

Whereas, it is noted with great pride that the Class of 1950 was the largest graduating class at Allen University. Many of the two hundred and forty students who started in the Class of 1946 were veterans of World War II. One hundred seventy four students graduated in 1950. Most graduates began careers in education, social work, civil service, politics, art, science, and the corporate world. Many graduates have made tangible contributions to the American dream and the society in which we all live; and they have achieved great success in their chosen professions; and

Whereas, Allen University honors the important milestone when its alumni have been graduated fifty years by holding a Golden Anniversary Luncheon and giving each member of the honored class a Golden Diploma commemorating the special occasion; and

Whereas, in this year of 2000, both the one hundred thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Allen University and the first Golden Anniversary Class in the twenty-first century are being celebrated and recognized. This year is an important milestone for both the institution of Allen University and the members of the Class of 1950. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor and commend the graduates of the Allen University Class of 1950 who now celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their graduation and congratulate them on the many successes and achievements which have come to them in their lives as a result of the excellent education received at Allen University.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Class of 1950 of Allen University.
