A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE LAURENS COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL ON ITS ACCREDITATION BY AND COMMENDATION FROM THE LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA, INC., AND OFFERING THE SUPPORT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN THE COUNCIL'S VITAL PURSUIT OF THE LITERACY OF ADULT SOUTH CAROLINIANS.

Whereas, the Laurens County Literacy Council has as its mission the achievement of adult literacy in the county; and

Whereas, the council undertook to equip itself for that mission by seeking national accreditation by the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc.; and

Whereas, national accreditation requires examination and approval of programs, including both services offered and standards used in measuring their effectiveness, as well as the areas of organization and finance and personnel; and

Whereas, a qualifying organization must meet eighteen standards in the three areas of review and score at least ten of fourteen scored standards; and

Whereas, results of an on-site visit by a national surveyor were wconveyed to the national accreditation review committee, which recommended that the Board of Directors of Literacy Volunteers of America award accreditation to the Laurens County Literacy Council; and

Whereas, the accreditation was awarded with commendation because the council met all eighteen of the qualifying standards and all fourteen of the scored standards; and

Whereas, the General Assembly recognizes and supports the superb and vital efforts of the Laurens County Literacy Council in pursuing the literacy of adult South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Laurens County Literacy Council on its accreditation by and commendation from the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., and offer their support in the council's vital pursuit of the literacy of adult South Carolinians.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Laurens County Literacy Council.
