A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. MAGGIE W. BROWN OF COLUMBIA FOR HER MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING A LONG, ACTIVE, AND PRODUCTIVE LIFE AND TO JOIN WITH HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS IN WISHING HER THE VERY BEST IN HEALTH AND HAPPINESS ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, Mrs. Maggie W. Brown was born on June 6, 1900, in Gadsden, South Carolina, the daughter of loving and devoted parents, the late Peter and Ella Goodwin; and

Whereas, raised in rural South Carolina after the turn of the century, Mrs. Brown received a general education of six years of school and lived in Hopkins until her mid-twenties, after which she moved to Columbia; and

Whereas, according to family members, Mrs. Brown was married to her late husband, Mr. John Brown, when she was about eighteen years of age, "back when it only costs $1.50 to get married at the court house". The late Mr. Brown and Mrs. Brown had four children, Mary Brown Belton, John Brown, Jr., Edward Brown, and the late Frank Brown, who passed away in 1989. Mrs. Brown is the proud grandmother of nineteen grandchildren and the equally proud great grandmother of twenty-seven great grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown is a devoted and long-time member of the Saint John Baptist Church in Columbia, where she attends Sunday school and is very active in the affairs of the church in conference. She belongs to and continues her interests in the missionary and evangelican work of the Emily Missionary and of the Sallie Boular Circle; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown is also a long-time member of the Order of the Tents, a benevolent organization of older and more experienced black women whose purpose is to preserve the memory and traditions of the Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad, and to carry on the work of ministering to and mentoring younger black women as they begin to make their way in the world and take on their responsibilities as young adult members of their respective families and of their church, their community, their state, and the nation; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brown, known for her love of gardening, sewing, taking long rides, and for her love and concern for her family and other people, has contributed much as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and productive member of society will reach the century mark and become one hundred years of age on June 6, 2000; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives wish to congratulate Mrs. Maggie W. Brown for her many accomplishments during a long, active, and productive life and join with her family and many friends in wishing her the very best in health and happiness on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Maggie W. Brown for her many accomplishments during a long, active, and productive life and join with her family and many friends in wishing her the very best in health and happiness on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Maggie W. Brown of Columbia.
