A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND RECOGNIZE ALVA SELETHA LEWIS OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS AN EDUCATOR AND PRINCIPAL IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Alva Seletha Lewis is retiring from the Edgefield County School District after serving thirty-four years as a teacher and principal; and

Whereas, Alva Seletha Lewis is the daughter of Willie and Leona Lewis; and

Whereas, Ms. Lewis received her high school diploma from Edgefield High School in 1962; her BS and M. Ed. degrees from South Carolina State in 1966 and 1971, respectively; and

Whereas, she began teaching in 1966, and is finishing her illustrious career as Principal of Douglas Elementary School in Edgefield County; and

Whereas, Alva Lewis is a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, unselfishly participating in the Church's Gospel Chorus; Beautification Club; Sunday School Instructor; and Church Club; and

Whereas, she is a member of the following education organizations: ECEA; SCEA; NEA; SCEMSP; NEMSP; SC-ASCD; SCNWAE; and CEC; and

Whereas, Ms. Lewis has contributed her time to serving on numerous civic organizations, among them are the Department of Social Services Advisory Board Chairperson, Edgefield-Downtown Development Board during the revitalization project, Chairperson of the Old Ninety-Six Tourism Commission, and the Board of Directors, Wachovia Bank; and

Whereas, she is a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club, Phi Delta Kappa, and the South Carolina State University Alumni Club; and

Whereas, Ms. Alva Lewis personifies the very best to which an educator may aspire by living by her educational philosophy:

"Every child can learn but must be challenged to reach his/her potential. As an educator my life-long goal is to see all my students succeed in the world of adulthood."

Whereas, Edgefield County and the State of South Carolina are fortunate to have had such a superb public servant and educator, and the General Assembly takes great pleasure in according Alva Lewis recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Alva Seletha Lewis of Edgefield County on the occasion of her retirement as an educator and principal in the public school system of Edgefield County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Alva Seletha Lewis.
